Exploring Roles in the ECE Community: Local and State Levels


Child Care Aware of America

I chose Child Care Aware of America because they provide resources to families, members, and providers. They also advocate for better child care, for projects that increase the quality and availability of child care, and for child care policies that improve the lives of children and their families. They also help military families find high-quality child care for their children.

Family Support Data Manager
                                                                Applicants must have: 
  •  Experience with performance management software for human service organizations (operating systems and database technology)
  •  Ability to generate project status reports, monitor and track project progress against goals and objectives.
  • Successful candidate will have 4-year degree in MIS, Computer Science, Child Development or related field. Familiarity with Head Start or other family and child serving programs; PROMIS12 a plus. 

Client Success Director
                                                             Knowledge and skills

  •  Familiarity with CCAoA products and services, including Training academy, Membership, and National Data System
  • Expertise in early childhood funding and systems:  CCDBG and QRIS
  •  Experience with implementation of systems to promote quality improvement and best practices
  • Relationship within CCAoA’s client base:  CCR&Rs and other agencies providing referral and professional development support in the early childhood community
  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred).

Orange County Head Start, Inc.

Orange County Head start is a nonprofit organization that empowers parents to become leaders in their children’s education and in their communities. They also provide children 0-5 years old and their families high-quality childhood development programs and other services for the entire family. They also work in the home with the child and the families.


                                                          Employment Opportunities:
Head Start Teacher

  •  Education: Minimum of an AA Degree or higher in ECE or related field and a current Child Development Teacher Permit or higher. BA degree in ECE or related field preferred.
  • Experience: Must have at least One (1) year experience as a teacher in an early childhood setting.
  •  Knowledge: Knowledge of early childhood development and Head Start Performance Standards.
  •  Language Skills: Oral and written fluency in English. Oral and written fluency in Spanish, and or Vietnamese may be required per as a result of community and workforce composition.
  •  Math Skills: Basic math skills required.
  • Other Requirements: Must have a valid California Driver License and proof of insurance. Must be able to drive to and from different family homes, centers, meetings and/or training venues. Successfully comply with the provisions of Senate Bill 933 and Orange County Head Start’s requirements relative to fingerprinting and criminal background checks.
  •  Other Abilities: Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing. Ability to develop children’s individual plans; plan daily schedule/lesson developmentally appropriate for child. Ability to work in a team environment. Ability to effectively teach, assign classroom teaching related activities to others, deal effectively with children, parents and others, and to be an effective member of a teaching team. Must be able to work in a high energy/high stress environment.

Zero to Three


Zero to Three has been one of my go to organizations for many years because they provide rich up-to date resources about development and well-being that includes not only the educators, but also the parents and extended family. Their resources and information is not only for educators, but also for children and their families. I also like the fact that they focus solely on the early years and their mission is to ensure that ALL babies and toddlers have a strong start in life. They also cover policy and advocacy.

                                                   Employment Opportunities:

Advocacy Specialist
  • At least 5 years of related experience in advocacy or policy work.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of advocacy and communications strategies, including grassroots organizing and social media.
  • Knowledge of policies affecting young children. 
  • Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills.
  • Strong organization and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple and changing responsibilities effectively.
  • Highly dependable with the ability to work in a “team-oriented environment.”
  • Ability to travel, including occasional overnight stays.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or related field proffered.

Early Childhood Education, Training and Technical Assistance
  • Minimum of seven years of experience in the field of Early Care and Education with two years of experience with project coordination and/or management.
  • Strong knowledge of early childhood development birth to five;
  • Strong knowledge of CLASS Pre-K observation tool and other program, teacher and child-level assessment tools commonly used in early childhood preschool programs;
  • Strong knowledge of Head Start program development, the Head Start Program Performance Standards, Head Start Outcomes Framework, and HS technical assistance resources;
  • Strong knowledge of CCDF and Public Pre-K programming trends and regulations in states and territories;
  • Excellent conceptual, written and oral skills;
  • Experience with organizing, developing and providing technical assistance resources to a variety of audiences;
  • Ability to work with a team as well as independently;
  • Strong oral, written and computer skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret complex documents,
  • Ability to collect, organize, analyze and display various types of data, and
  • Able to travel.
  •  Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field preferred.

    I appreciated the fact that all of the position you listed were focused around supplying resources and opportunities for the entire family. I also found that your selection of positions speaks to your own interest in being an advocate for progress in the area of child development and sharing your knowledge with others.

    I enjoy empowering the entire family. I believe that as teachers we can only do so much, but when we empower the parents, we can accomplish more. I also enjoy empowering others in the field and advocating for people’s rights. Thank you for your feedback.

  3. Hi Reyna!
    Zero to Three is an organization that I have been familiar with for many years. My program attends their conferences annually as well as the professional development opportunities that are web-based. I am also connected to Head Start as a Board member of KHSA and Region IV Board. It's good to be in familiar company!

    I have previous experience as site supervisor and I was also a director for a children’s center for five years. I enjoy working and empowering other professionals that work with young children.

    I have not heard of zero to three before. This sounds like a great organization that can help children from birth and assist them to get to them early for intervention. Parents need as much resources as possible to help them with raising their children.
